Paul R. Hannah was born and raised in North Dakota, and attended Harvard College and Harvard Law School. Upon graduation from law school in 1972, he spent one year as a law clerk to Judge Charles Vogel of the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In 1973, Mr. Hannah joined the Twin Cities law firm of Oppenheimer, Wolff and Donnelly, leaving that firm in 1986 to strike out on his own. Until 1996, he was senior partner in the law firm of Hannah & Zenner. He then was a sole practitioner until April 1, 2005, when he became a partner at Kelly & Berens.

Mr. Hannah has a substantial practice in media and First Amendment law, practicing in the area for over 25 years. He has represented the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Duluth News-Tribune, Hubbard Broadcasting, CBS, WCCO-TV, and KTCA-TV on an ongoing basis. He has also advised the Minnesota Historical Society Press; and, on a periodic basis, Gannett Broadcasting, Inc., which holds the license of KARE-TV and the Star-Tribune in Minneapolis.

Mr. Hannah has been involved in pre-publication review of newspaper and broadcast investigative stories, has given advice on investigative reporting techniques, and has handled access and shield law litigation, and has litigated defamation and related claims. Mr. Hannah conducts newsroom seminars on these and other media issues. The stories in which he has been involved have won major national and regional journalism awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, national Emmy and Peabody awards.

Mr. Hannah has also advised artists, newspapers, television stations and book publishers, and other clients on intellectual property rights and responsibilities. He has represented clients on copyright and trademark litigation throughout his career. 

 
Mr. Hannah has represented insurers and insureds on a plethora of coverage litigation matters around the country. Cases in which he was involved include first-party and third-party claims, business and directors’ and officers’ insurance disputes, and extracontractual or “bad faith” claims. He has represented various shareholder interests, and managed an investigation of a national company on behalf of its special litigation committee.
